We caught up with Johnny in-between one of his shoots, for a quick interview on his texture perspective and to get the rundown on the gorgeous NYFW textured hair extensions looks he styled for his talented celebrity media personality clients - Angela Rye and Tiffany Cross.
What impact were you seeking to have on NYFW with Angela Rye + Tiffany Cross, with the use of voluminous textured hair extensions from True + Pure Texture?

What style did you create with Angela Rye and what curly hair extensions transformation were you seeking?
Angela loves to show as much texture as possible, so I wanted to create an opportunity to show her hair in that way with glam.
With Angela’s curly hair extensions style I used the True + Pure Texture Sasha Curl 24 inch TruPart Wig. I created a big side parted texture bob to accentuate a texture moment. Even though her NYFW dress was colorful, it was streamlined. So I wanted to give her volume to create a little more dazzling texture presence with her hair.
How did Angela Rye react when she saw her look for the first time?
Angela loved it! The huge benefit for her was it was a wig, so there was no heat or tension. Her hair was braided down so I didn’t have to manipulate her style – allowing her to experience the benefits of a protective style in that moment.
What style did you create with Tiffany Cross and what textured hair extensions transformation were you seeking?
Tiffany mostly wears her hair straight. So I wanted to make sure even with her hair straight, she had true texture to best match it – while feeling as free as she could be.
With Tiffany’s textured hair extensions style I used the True + Pure Texture Relaxed Natural 18 inch TruPart and True + Pure Texture Relaxed Natural 12 inch Clip-Ins. I wanted to keep the look she’s been rocking with the over the shoulder bob, just with elevated texture – which is perfect with Relaxed Natural. I transformed her style with a part in the middle – adding the clip-ins which measured perfectly with her hair. During Tiffany’s styling I blew her hair out, flat ironed the tracks separately, and then married them together. With this look it’s all about the placement of the clip-ins so it can have that seamless finish and natural fall to it for movement.
How did Tiffany Cross react when she saw her look for the first time?
Tiffany loved it too! She was looking in the mirror and twirling her hair all around.
Okayyy. Let’s get down to the #BlackExcellence flair behind the chair. What makes Johnny Wright one of the greatest textured hair stylists on the planet?
Well greatness is in the eye of the beholder. I just know I’ve done my due diligence to educate myself to the fullest on all textures. This allows me to confidently invite anyone to my chair because I can execute any texture style. My continuous education is the key to my success. I never feel like I’ve learned enough. Even though I wrote the book, “Natural & Curly Hair For Dummies,” in teaching all things hairstyling and texture – I’m always learning too.
“I always remain a green apple because I always want to seek nourishment,” said Johnny.
When did you develop an obsession with texture styling?
All hair has texture to me. I developed a passion for hair very early on. I began loving and wanting to play in hair at the age of 9. I began doing hair at 11 and I had a full clientele by 12. My parents were very supportive of me, as well as my grandmother.
In Johnny’s bio he shares more about the bond between him and his grandmother regarding his passion for hairstyling. “My grandmother was a working stylist and colorist up until she was 91 years old. She knew I was going to be a hairstylist because I always wanted to comb her hair. It was a spiritual thing that bonded me to her. She recognized my passion.”
What’s a texture truth you believe the world needs to know?
The coarser the hair, the better! The more coarse the texture is, the more versatility to do so much more with it. I love the word “COARSE!” Make sure you use that word in this blog. Coarse is great!
You are a ride or fly True + Pure Texture advocate to the utmost! Why do you choose True + Pure Texture to achieve many of your hottest celebrity texture looks?
Most of my clients are Black women, with a wide variant of texture. My pet peeve was seeing Black women with all this silky straight hair as extensions, that didn’t match their natural hair. This was obvious with the highly visible line of demarcation. What was even more disturbing was many felt this had to be the case as their only option.
