Quick Answer
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear behind the chair is, "The back of my hair grows so much faster than the front."
In my experience, the front of your hair is usually not growing more slowly. More often, it's growing at a similar biological rate but has a much farther distance to travel before you see the same visible length. At the same time, the front of your hair experiences the most daily styling, heat, tension, and manipulation, making it much harder to retain the length it's already growing.
The important distinction is this:
Hair growth begins at the scalp. Visible length is measured by where the hair falls.
Those are two very different things.
100% virgin hair extensions specifically crafted for beautiful natural texture like True + Pure Texture can create immediate fullness while your natural hair continues to grow. True + Pure Texture now offers all 6 of its signature textures at Ulta.com.

Why Does the Front of My Hair Look Shorter?
People naturally judge their hair by what they see in the mirror—not by what's happening beneath the scalp.
Hair growing from your forehead must travel over the highest point of your head before it begins falling toward your shoulders. Hair growing from the nape starts much closer to that same destination.
Imagine two runners beginning the same race at different starting lines. Even if they're running at the exact same speed, the runner with the longer course will appear to finish later.
The front of your hair works the same way.
From a styling perspective, I often explain it like this:
The front almost has to grow three times the visual distance before it appears even with the back.
I'm not saying the follicles literally grow three times faster. Rather, because of the shape of the head and where those strands begin, the front has a much longer journey before it reaches the same visible "hang point" as the back.
That's why so many people believe the back is growing faster when, in reality, it simply arrives sooner.
Why Does the Back of My Hair Grow Faster?
In many cases, it actually doesn't.
The back of your hair benefits from gravity almost immediately. Those strands naturally fall downward, creating the appearance of length much sooner.
The front has to travel over the curve of your head before gravity fully takes over.
The back also tends to receive much less daily stress.
For most people, the nape isn't repeatedly:
- Flat ironed
- Curled
- Brushed forward
- Smoothed with edge control
- Pulled into tight ponytails
- Blended every morning with leave-out
- Constantly touched throughout the day
Less manipulation often means better length retention.
Growth and Length Retention Are Not the Same Thing
One of the first things I evaluate isn't whether someone's hair is growing.
It's whether they're keeping the growth they're already producing.
Hair can grow normally while still appearing to stay the same length if the ends continually break.
This is known as length retention.
Many people spend hundreds of dollars trying new growth products when the real issue is repeated breakage around the perimeter.
Until you solve the breakage, visible length becomes difficult to achieve.
From Behind the Chair: What I Look At First

After working with thousands of clients over nearly three decades, I've found that several common habits make the front of the hair appear shorter than the back.
Excessive Daily Manipulation
The front of your hair simply works harder.
It's brushed more, touched more, tucked behind the ears, restyled before work, smoothed with edge products, and adjusted throughout the day.
Even small amounts of daily friction add up over time.
Heat and Chemical Damage
Most people concentrate their styling where everyone looks first.
The front often receives more passes with a flat iron, curling iron, or blow dryer than any other section of the head.
Face-framing highlights, bleaching, repeated coloring, and frequent thermal styling can gradually weaken those strands, making them more susceptible to breakage.
Tension Around the Hairline
High ponytails, sleek buns, tight braids, repeated lace installations, and styles that consistently pull around the hairline place ongoing stress on delicate perimeter hairs.
Over time, excessive tension may contribute to traction alopecia, which is why proper installation and style rotation are so important.
Hormones and Genetics
Not every change is caused by styling.
The hairline is often more sensitive to hormonal shifts and inherited genetic patterns than other parts of the scalp.
If you've noticed progressive thinning around your temples or front hairline, internal factors may also be contributing.
Even Your Pillow Matters
Many people overlook nighttime friction.
Cotton pillowcases can repeatedly catch fragile hairs while you sleep.
Sleeping with a satin bonnet or on a silk or satin pillowcase helps reduce unnecessary friction and supports better length retention.
Why Most Women Need Hair Extensions in the Front
One observation I've made throughout my career surprises many clients.
Most women don't actually need more hair everywhere.
They simply need more hair in the front.
This becomes especially noticeable with textured bobs.

The back naturally creates the shape and fullness because it reaches the desired visual length first.
The front often appears thinner, shorter, or less balanced—not because it isn't growing—but because it hasn't completed the same visual journey.
Adding professionally placed textured extensions around the front can immediately restore proportion without overwhelming the style.
Sometimes it's not about creating longer hair.
It's about creating a more beautiful silhouette.

Where Hair Extensions Fit In
This is one of the reasons I created True + Pure Texture.
For nearly 30 years, I've watched women become frustrated because the front of their hair never seemed to catch up with the back. Many assumed they needed another growth oil or miracle serum when what they really needed was better balance, thoughtful placement, and a texture that blended naturally with their own hair.

Beautiful textured hair extensions do more than just simply add length.
They should solve real styling challenges while honoring your natural texture.
Whether you're wearing a polished bob, soft curls, glamorous coils, shoulder-length layers, or a blown-out silk press, professionally texture-matched extensions can instantly create the fullness, density, and face-framing balance that the front of the hair often struggles to achieve on its own.
This is especially true for textured bobs.

The back naturally builds the shape, while the front often benefits from additional fullness to complete the silhouette. In many cases, only a small amount of professionally placed extensions around the front and sides creates the polished, proportional finish clients are looking for.
That's why every True + Pure Texture collection is luxuriously crafted from 100% virgin human hair and designed specifically for textured women. Instead of asking women to force their hair to blend with generic straight or loosely curled extensions, we created six professionally developed textures spanning loose waves, curls, coils, and blown-out natural textures to seamlessly match the movement, density, and characteristics of real textured hair.
The goal isn't to disguise your natural hair.
The goal is to work with it.
One of the greatest benefits of textured curly extensions like True + Pure Texture is that they often reduce the need to constantly manipulate your natural hair. When your style already has the fullness and face-framing balance you want, you're less likely to repeatedly flat iron your leave-out, overwork your edges, or continuously restyle the front to make it appear thicker.
Your natural hair can continue its normal growth journey underneath while you enjoy the confidence of a beautifully balanced style today.
That's the philosophy behind True + Pure Texture.
Not simply adding more hair—but solving real texture challenges while celebrating every curl, coil, and wave.

A Final Professional Insight from Pekela Riley: Hair Practitioner/Celebrity Stylist/Founder of True + Pure Texture & Salon PK
Before assuming the front of your hair isn't growing, ask yourself a different question:
Is it truly growing more slowly—or does it simply have farther to travel while experiencing more daily breakage?
In my experience, it's often the second.
Understanding the difference between hair growth, visible length, and length retention allows you to make better decisions about your hair care routine and determine whether strategic textured hair extensions can help you achieve the balanced, fuller look you want while protecting the beautiful hair you're already growing.
Also keep in mind, textured extensions like True + Pure Texture can create immediate fullness while your natural hair continues to grow.
Professional Note: If you notice sudden shedding, visible recession around the hairline, bald patches, scalp discomfort, inflammation, or persistent thinning that continues despite changing your styling routine, consult a dermatologist, physician, or qualified trichologist. While styling habits often contribute to breakage, medical conditions, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, and certain forms of hair loss should be professionally evaluated.
